XP on the out, along with auto-run viruses

With some recent updates to Windows AutoRun this year, there has been a significant decrease in malware and viruses that are programmed to 'auto-run' on your computer. Vista and XP updates have shown a decrease in 62% and 82% respectively, in comparison to last year. Service Pack 3 has all but killed off those pesky auto-run viruses, to hopefully give our computers a little bit of a breather between commonly encountered computer viruses. It's always a good idea to ensure you have an excellent anti-virus software installed on your computer as well, for complete malware protection.

Reduction in computer infections

Talking about days that are numbered, Windows XP is on the slippery slope to 'a mere memory'. Microsoft has released a desktop gadget to remind customers and businesses that Windows XP stops being patched in 2014. The gadget, which can be downloaded from Microsoft's website, displays a box on your desktop, counting down days until Windows XP falls out of support.

XP end of support button

Microsoft wants its users to stop using Windows XP and purchase a new Operating System, like Windows 7, or the soon available Windows 8. Although, it could be a little bit much, given that the countdown does still have more than two years to go.

This gadget is particularly useful for slow-moving businesses and IT shops as a reminder of the fact that XP support in not guaranteed forever.
